🔪 How To Prepare it
The recipe is broken down into 2 main steps, 3 if you count peeling all the apples! First, we will make a shortbread crust and then, we will add the apple filling. Finally, we will add the crumble top.
Let's get started!
Making A Homemade Pastry Crust
Homemade pie crust is easy to make and requires only 4 ingredients:
- Soft butter
- All-purpose flour
- Sugar
- Egg
In a small bowl, cream the butter with sugar. Add in the beaten egg. Mix well. You will have a creamy mixture.
Fold in the flour to incorporate the mixture and flour. Using a spatula, fold the flour and pretend to cut in the middle with the tip of your spatula to incorporate the flour. Repeat this gesture until you can gather the dough into a smooth ball. Set aside in the fridge for 20 to 30 minutes.
Note: I used my dough scraper.
What Is Crumble Topping Made Of?
This buttery crumble topping recipe is super easy to put together and is a little different than the regular apple crisp that you may know as there are no oats in it.
You will need 4 ingredients:
- Almond flour (almond ground, almond powder, it is all the same!)
- Granulated sugar or brown sugar works too
- Butter soften
- Vanilla extract
In a bowl, pour all the dry ingredients: flour, almond powder, and sugar, and mix it together. Then, add the butter. No need to use a food processor, just go ahead and use your hands to mix until it crumbles.
Tip: if you are using cold butter, cut it in small pieces to make the process easier.
Assembling The Tart
Finally, we are reaching the final part! This is a good moment to preheat the oven.
1 - Grab your dough that has been chilling and roll it down and place it in a tart pan.
2 - Spread your favorite jam at the bottom.
3 - Peel and cut into squares your apples and place them all on the crust.
4 - Cover with the crumble topping
Substitute for the jam: use apple sauce if you want to reduce the sugar in your dessert or like in my apple pie.
Now, bake for 30 minutes or when the crumbles appear golden brown. Allow to cool and serve with a scoop of ice cream!
💭 FAQ For This Recipe
An apple tart would only have a crust and the apple filling while the apple crumble would be apples in a mold or ramekin topped with a crumbly and buttery crust topping. Here we have the best of both worlds.
I typically use the Honey Crisp or the Pink Lady. If you want to dive deeper into it, the Pioneer Woman gives an amazing run down on all the variety of apples.
Absolutely, it is pretty much like a pie crust but crumbled up, it needs baking for sure.
No, no need. Just peel them and cut them as directed in the recipe.
If you have any leftovers, and I say ''IF'', you need to store them in the fridge for 2 to 3 days.
